La Cana AlbariƱo 2008

La Cana

89 points Jay Miller (Wine Advocate): "The 2008 La Cana Albarino is the first release of the collaboration between the Gil family of Jumilla and importer Jorge Ordonez. Their intention was to make a more austere style of Albarino. Light gold-colored, it reveals an attractive perfume of pear, lemon-lime, and pineapple. Vibrant on the palate with excellent natural acidity, this racy Albarino will drink well for another three years. It is an excellent value. (Jun 2009)"

88 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Yellow-gold. Ripe pear and peach on the nose, with notes of pungent herbs and talc adding energy. Fleshy, weighty apple and pear flavors are enlivened by notes of orange and honeysuckle, with a kick of white pepper on the back. For a rich wine this boasts good energy and finishing clarity. (Sep/Oct 2009)"

Los Angeles Times "Wine of the Week": "On one of those three-digit hot days last week, I opened a bottle of this sublime AlbariƱo from the lush green Celtic part of Spain, Galicia. What a beauty! Scented with lime and white peaches, it has a bracing minerality that balances the lush ripe fruit. The 2008 Bodegas La Cana, named for the canes that grow along the rivers, exhibits finesse and grace in a beautiful package. Serve well chilled as an aperitif with a bowl of toasted almonds and olives, with summery salads and chilled seafood, grilled prawns or lobster. (9/30/09)"

Retails for about $15.99.

Keeping things simple in summer

Summer decor

In the summer, I think we all can agree that keeping life simple is key. And that goes for your decor as well.  The path to comfort leads us outside.  The best one can do is bring some chairs outside, set up near a big ol' tree with some chilled wine and hard-to-break tumblers and enjoy.  The more we can bring the outside in or the inside out, the better.  Minimal detail, lively color or white-only and materials like metal or plastic seem to make things easy.  As for me, I threw some white flat sheets over our dark chenille sofa.  It's keeping us cooler, both physically and mentally, and when fall comes I can just throw them in the wash. Simple.

Slow, Hot Summer

Summer night
Well folks, I would have blogged about summer months ago had I not been so hot and lazy!  It's been a record-breaking summer in the Northeast with about five heat waves, each one lasting weeks.  Our savior has been air conditioning in this part of the country.  However, that's not to say that summer hasn't brought its traditional fun.  For me that's been my family's annual trip to The Hamptons where we visited many of the local vineyards (bringing home SIXTEEN bottles from Wolffer Estate, Channing Daughters, Paumanok, Osprey's Dominion, Pellegrini and Laurel Lakes) and ate tons of fresh sea food (thank you Silver's for my annual fresh lobster salad).  It's also meant trips to the country which have been particularly interesting with art shows, outdoor festivals, free concerts, etc.  Now with just about one month of summer left, we should remember to take advantage of its offerings.  Like me, I hope that you'll try to get to the beach at least once more, leave the office early on one more Friday, keep your decorating light, white and care-free, seek out some passion fruit-flavored sorbetti or gelatti and, of course, quietly enjoy one last glass of chilled rose' from your favorite outdoors spot.

Sincerely,
